The masterminds behind Hitman, IO Interactive, are trading in Agent 47âs barcode for a tuxedoâor rather, the training suit that comes before it. Their new James Bond game, 007 First Light, is a fresh origin story that winds the clock back to a younger, "unrefined" Bond learning the ropes of espionage. The first look at the 007 First Light gameplay reveals a blend of IOI's signature sandbox stealth with explosive, blockbuster action.
A hands-off demo at Gamescom revealed the 007 First Light gameplay is a game of two distinct halves. The first is pure Hitman: Bond infiltrates a lavish mansion, not as an assassin, but as a spy. He uses social stealth, flirts with staff to lower their guard, and creates environmental distractions to slip past security. This part of the 007 First Light gameplay is less about the kill and more about the creative approach, with an Omega Q Watch serving as an elegant HUD for analyzing the environment and managing gadgets.
Then, the 007 First Light gameplay flips the switch to full-blown action movie. The demo showcased a chaotic, Uncharted-style car chase through a Swiss market, filled with scripted destruction and near-misses. This sequence led directly into a cover-based shootout at an airbase, culminating in Bond chasing a transport plane down the runway. Itâs a drastic change of pace from the quiet infiltration, proving 007 First Light aims to capture every facet of a Bond filmâfrom the tense espionage to the over-the-top set-pieces.
