The mid-1980s. Imagine the oppressive California heat, but the real chill came after sunset. This was not a fictional horror; it was a violation of the sacred. A boogeyman was real, and he didn't just haunt your nightmares—he pried open your window screen while you slept. He was a phantom who left a trail of bloody, satanic terror, a walking nightmare who proved that the one place you were supposed to be safe, your home, was his hunting ground. He became known as the 'Night Stalker'.

.
.

When the phantom was finally caught, the face was revealed: Richard Ramirez, a gaunt 25-year-old with dead eyes and a defiant smirk. He proudly declared he was a Satanist, and that one detail is what transformed the case from a brutal crime spree into a dark, public obsession. This wasn't a case of 'born evil.' It was a chilling recipe, and the first ingredients were added during his childhood, which was a minefield of trauma. He suffered two severe head injuries as a young boy—one from a falling dresser, another from a swing set—that doctors later speculated could be linked to the epileptic seizures he began having in class. But physical trauma was just the beginning. The real darkness was invited in by his cousin, a "war hero" he idolized. This cousin didn't just tell war stories; he showed 13-year-old Richard Polaroids of atleast 20 women he claimed to have raped and murdered overseas. He taught the boy combat skills. And then, in one horrifying moment, Richard watched him, in a fit of rage, put a .38 revolver to his wife's head and pull the trigger...

With a role model like that, his own home offered no sanctuary. His father, known for a violent temper, once allegedly dragged a young Richard to a cemetery and left him chained there overnight as a punishment. It’s no wonder he fled, only to land with his sister and her husband, Roberto, a man who got his thrills as a peeping Tom, lurking in the shadows of their neighborhood to secretly watch unsuspecting people through their windows. In a twisted form of family bonding, Roberto invited the teenage Ramirez along, who eagerly joined him on these nightly prowls, learning how to move undetected in the dark and violate the private sanctity of a home.
