So James Watson finally shuffled off this mortal coil at 97 and if you have ever taken a biology class you know the name. This is the guy who basically cracked the code for human existence back in 1953 along with Francis Crick. They walked into a pub in Cambridge and announced they had found the secret of life which sounds like the ultimate pickup line but turned out to be scientifically accurate. It was the double helix and it changed everything from how we catch criminals to how we make vaccines. You would think that secures a legacy of pure gold but history is never that simple.

The drama behind that discovery is worthy of a Netflix series because it wasn't just two guys brainstorming. They built their model using X-ray images snapped by Rosalind Franklin who did the heavy lifting while they did the model building. She didn't even know they were using her data which is the original group project nightmare where you do the work and the other guys get the grade. Watson and Crick got the Nobel Prize in 1962 and Franklin got a footnote because she had tragically passed away by then. It was the golden age of molecular biology but the foundation was a bit shaky.

For decades Watson was the rockstar of science running Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and writing bestsellers. But then the genius started saying things that were not just controversial but straight-up awful. He went on record making baseless claims about race and intelligence and disparaging women in science which is ironic considering who helped him get famous. The scientific community which usually tolerates eccentric personalities drew a hard line. He went from being the grandfather of genetics to a social pariah almost overnight and the fall from grace was absolutely brutal to watch.
