After a significant rhetorical shift from U.S. President Donald Trump, Germany's Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul has stated that Europe must take on a larger role in supporting Ukraine. Trump, who had previously encouraged Ukraine to cede territory to end the war, now seems to back the country in taking back all of its land from Russia. This change in tone from the United States could place more of the burden on European nations to provide financial and military aid.
For a long time, European leaders have spoken about the need for greater self-sufficiency and becoming more sovereign.
