I’ll be honest: my expectations for a third Now You See Me film, arriving nearly a decade after the last one, were rock bottom. I walked into Now You See Me: Now You Don't expecting, well, crap. But here I am, happy to report that what I got was... reliably entertaining. Now in theaters, this sequel reunites the original Horsemen, including Jesse Eisenberg, and teams them up with three new up-and-comers for another global heist.

The plot is exactly what you’d expect: the new-and-old magicians must combine their skills to take down the villainous head of a diamond empire who's funding all manner of "unsavory folk." It’s a dime-store Ocean's movie with magicians, and it fully embraces that. The film does a surprisingly good job of blending the two generations of illusionists, even if it kicks things off with one of the laziest "backstory vomits" I’ve seen in a long time, courtesy of Eisenberg's character.

Look, this is not an Oscar-bait character piece. It’s a stylish, slick package designed for mass appeal. The illusions are fun, and the film wisely avoids the trap of one single, massive reveal at the end. Instead, it hits you with a "fooled you!" moment, then explains how, and repeats the process. It's a formula that keeps you hooked and prevents you from feeling lost in a sea of misdirection.
