The latest football thriller, HIM, throws us into a world where athletic ambition meets unsettling mentorship. Helmed by director Justin Tipping and starring an intensely dramatic Marlon Wayans alongside newcomer Tyreek Withers, the film promises a claustrophobic, high-stakes showdown. As a longtime fan of films that explore the dark side of ambition, I was excited to see what this one had to say. The plot centers on an exceptionally talented young quarterback, played by Withers, who seems destined for greatness. To take his skills to the next level, he enters an elite, secluded training camp run by a reclusive and legendary former quarterback (Wayans). It’s a classic mentor-mentee setup that feels a lot like Whiplash, but instead of a jazz drummer and a ruthless conductor, we have a football prodigy and a charismatic but deeply unsettling coach. The initial tension is palpable, and you can feel the pressure mounting with every snap.
I’m thrilled to report that this film is a feast for the eyes. The visual style is electrifying, full of striking shots and unique camera work that make it feel more like a fever dream than a grounded sports drama. The performances, too, are an absolute masterclass. But what happens on that secluded training field goes beyond what anyone expected, and it’s not what’s on the surface that will leave you scratching your head…
