Feudal Japan isn’t done with its ghosts just yet. This fall, PlayStation unleashes Ghost of Yotei, a samurai kick to the senses that’s part vengeance epic, part chilly open-world playground, and all sorts of eye candy. You’ll step into the frozen boots of Atsu, a ronin with a bone to pick and a katana that’s seen better days—well, ever since it pinned her to a tree during her family’s murder, anyway.
Set three centuries after Ghost of Tsushima, the game drops you smack in the middle of 1603 Ezo, a land more wild than a pack of hungry tanuki and home to the indigenous Ainu. Atsu’s quest is simple: hunt down the infamous Yotei Six—snake, oni, kitsune, spider, dragon, plus the not-so-cuddly Lord Saito. One by one, these ultra-baddies will learn why revenge plots always sound better on paper than when a furious ronin comes knocking.
You get to play hit list bingo, choosing your targets in any order as you explore snow-swept plains, haunted forests, and enough danger to keep even the bravest samurai on their toes. Want to take a break? Try your hand at sumi-e painting, bamboo cutting, or just jamming on a shamisen while the northern lights flicker overhead. And did we mention the infamous Legends multiplayer mode is back, promising myth-sized bosses and team battles that could leave even seasoned warriors whimpering for their onsen break?
